I’m probably preaching to the choir on this one however, it’s nice to see this information coming from a well respected economic blog.

Based on the latest reports in the Washington Post the US government is increasingly applying methods that until a few years ago were mainly associated with the Nazi and other totalitarian regimes. Sorry for the harsh words towards the government and its operatives of an otherwise mostly wonderful people, but the long string of scandals that has been engulfing the US leaves me no other choice. The images to your right are composites of 10 women with highest and 10 with lowest levels of oestrogen. Can you tell which is which? Leave your guesses in the comments. See story for answer.
The new study, led by psychologist Miriam Law Smith, could explain the underlying reason why men prefer women with feminine faces. It is the first study to demonstrate that women’s facial appearance is linked to their underlying health because oestrogen is the hormone which impacts on women’s reproductive health and fertility. These effects on appearance are likely to depend on the action of oestrogen throughout puberty. Link

Heather Bennett, my good friend and fellow creative misfit, has been hiding out in Dutch countryside stitching up uniquely charming and absurdly humorous plush dolls and props. The dolls are all hand sewn using dutch wool, vintage materials, and odd bits collected from markets in Belgium and Nederland.
Heather says: “I was inspired by the old flemish paintings I saw this summer—and mixed it with a little fairy talishness.”
So far she’s made some 140 dolls which retail for around 80 Euros (she’s also willing to trade for goods and services). Designs range from anxious bears and pompadoured baroque maidens to mischievous mustachioed devils. Over the next week or so I’ll be posting images of her dolls along with some anecdotes.

They strut their stuff and shake their booties as well as any pop band worldwide, and their infectious dance tunes are taking the Asian music scene by storm.
But in one crucial respect Lady, the hottest music act to come out of South Korea in years, are not your average girl group. They may have looks that many women would die for - but none of these four singers was born as a lady. Link

This picture reminds me of when I was a wee lad whiling away the hours playing computer games on monochrome monitored machines at my mothers work while she put in some over time. Ahhh the good old days.

Anyone who knows me know that I’m a big fan of RSS technology. If you’re not familiar with RSS there’s a good introduction to it over a Search Engine Watch.
Bootleg RSS: TV Edition is a site that features one great example of how useful RSS can be. The site offers a free collection of television channel listings for many cable stations which are sorted by timezone. Now that several web browsers -including Firefox- feature support for RSS feeds this means you can get your favorite channels listings right in your browser’s toolbar. I’m sure there’s some HTPC software out there that could take advantage of this also.

Coronado Filters, makers of solar telescopes has a gallery of awe inspiring, user submitted images. That giant fire ball in the sky never looked so good. Some of the more amazing photos look to be taken at sunrise/set and feature power poles, trees, and even a few birds silhouetted in the foreground. If anyone wants to buy me one of these telescopes for xmas I won’t be disappointed!
